1.09 Bad Judgment: Richard Serra, Rumination and Guggenheim

Richard Serra Rumination Guggenheim

Rumination on the Physicality of Space and the Nature of Sculpture is neither the name of a work by Richard Serra nor is it the name of any of his exhibitions. Rather it is the theme that runs through all of his work.  In 2005 the Guggenheim Bilbao held an exhibition of Serra’s work with the name A Matter of Time. It included Snake and 7 other sculptures measuring between 12 and 14 feet in height and weighing from 44 to 276 tons. These sculptures are now permanently installed there. In 2007 the MoMA in New York held a retrospective of Serra’s work. It consisted of 27 of Serra’s work including Intersection II and Torqued Ellipse IV along with three new works especially made for the exhibition. Mix it all together and you know what Neal is talking about at this morning.
