4.15 The Original: Bernini and Dubois

NP 415 text

Bernini Baroque Borghese Paul Dubois
August Rodin The Hand of God . .

Two things need to be mentioned concerning this episode. The patron of Bernini was Scipione Borghese, the nephew and adopted son of Pope Paul V (Camillo Borghese). The Marcantonio Borghese, who moved the sculptures was Marcantonio III Borghese. When he lived Bernini was long dead already and couldn’t have added plaster in the plinth.

Olivier Dubois doesn’t exist. Who did exist was the French sculptor Paul Dubois. A sculpture of Joan of Arc, a copy of a sculpture he created, can be seen in Washington, DC. The Hand Over Hand sculpture as shown in the show is imo inspired by Rodin’s work, another Frenchman. If  you’re interested to learn why, check his bio and his sculpture The Hand of God that can be seen at the MoMA in New York.
