|Romanticism||Francisco Goya||War Bonds||Four Freedoms|
Spanish Victory Bonds issued by the US government and adorned with a Goya print do not exist. Yet, as can be read when following the links above, the US government issued WWII Series E Bond was closely tied with contemporary art, especially Norman Rockwell’s series Four Freedoms. Goya on a war bond however? His ‘The Disasters of War’ series is a protest of the cruelties and violence of the war of his time – the Peninsula War. Up to today they are a monument warning against any armed conflict, comparable to Picasso’s Guernica. A war bond adorned with any of those prints would be a hard sell.
