1.05 The Portrait: Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Matisse and this Hungarian

Impressionism Post-Impressionism Fauvism Henri Matisse
László Mednyánszky Mona Lisa

A Hungarian post-Impressionist by the name Haustenberg does to my knowledge not exist. The painting Young Girl with Locket as used in this episode shows the same composition as Matisse’s Young Woman with Blue Blouse. This is a piece from 1939 and is clearly expressionistic. The impressionistic influence on the painting as used in the episode might come from Renoir.

Last but not least, who might this Hungarian post-Impressionist be, Haustenberg is László Mednyánszky. He is well-known for the Impressionistic influence in his work. Furthermore, in Hungarian it is custom to write the last name first and then the given name. László Mednyánszky would be Mednyánszky László as in Julianna László, the granddaughter of Haustenberg.
